President Obama and Education Secretary Arne Duncan want American children in school more and at home less. “Young people in other countries are going to school 25, 30 percent longer than our students here,” Duncan told the AP. “I want to just level the playing field.” Obama and Duncan want to extend the school day by up to three hours, that’s right three hours. Now America’s children can be burdened more by the stringent and off base regulations of the Department of Education, they can spend less time doing what children are supposed to do, play, and they can enjoy family time, well, at dinner. Happy yet? No? How about shortening summer vacation as well? That’s the President’s plan and he wants you behind it.
First, lets over work our already underpaid teachers and watch the best and brightest continue to pursue more lucrative careers while the bottom of the barrel has more access to our children. Second, lets take children out of the home more often so that they spend less time with their parent’s learning about life and morals and more time learning songs about Obama and “equal pay for an equal day’s work”.
Obama says that this push is to keep American kids competitive with other students around the world who spend more time in school. Yet, according to an article from Foxnews.com (click for article) “Kids in the U.S. spend more hours in school (1,146 instructional hours per year) than do kids in the Asian countries that persistently outscore the U.S. on math and science tests — Singapore (903), Taiwan (1,050), Japan (1,005) and Hong Kong (1,013). That is despite the fact that Taiwan, Japan and Hong Kong have longer school years (190 to 201 days) than does the U.S. (180 days).” Obama is ignoring the problem just those before him, both Democrat and Republican, American students are underachieving because our education system is broken. We underpay our teachers, over work our students, allow failing Department of education to dictate how children are taught, and do not hold parents responsible for their children’s education.
Adding to the school day and lengthening the school year would simply put American kids at more of a disadvantage than their global counterparts. In Japan, they teach mathematics in math class, not “why capitalism is bad for America”. In biology class, they teach biology, not “why creation is just a myth”. Still, this is part of Obama’s “progressive plan”, keep the kids in school, indoctrinate them, teach them songs about the dear leader and keep them away from their parent’s, many of which are (gasp) conservative.
Just another confusing day for a disgruntled Republican living in a strange world.
